Who Gets to Sell Sex? The History & Politics of Sex Work

Cady S. Moore, MPH, CSE AASECT-Certified Sexuality Educator & Coach

Location - Teneral Cellars Tasting Room & Wine Lounge

Sex work is often called “the world’s oldest profession."
But how much do we actually know about its history, the people who do it, or the laws that govern it?

From the ancient world to today's digital economy, sex work has existed alongside changing ideas about sexuality, morality, labor, power, and who gets to decide what people can do with their bodies.

Cady S. Moore, MPH, CSE, an AASECT-Certified Sexuality Educator, will take us through the complicated and often misunderstood history of sex work. We'll explore what we actually mean by sex work, how consensual sex work differs from sex trafficking, and how attitudes and laws surrounding the industry have changed over time.

We'll also turn to the debates shaping sex work today: What's the difference between criminalization, legalization, and decriminalization? What is the Nordic model? What did FOSTA-SESTA change about sex work online—and what happened afterward? And why does the language we use to talk about sex workers matter?

You'll leave with historical context, a clearer understanding of today's competing approaches to regulating sex work, and a better grasp of an industry that has existed throughout human history but remains widely misunderstood.

Cady S. Moore, MPH, CSE, is an AASECT-Certified Sexuality Educator and Supervisor-in-Training and the foundress of Age of Sexploration, a sex education and coaching business, and MOTHERLODE, a body-safe pleasure product shop. She holds an MPH in Maternal and Child Health from the University of Minnesota and has spent nearly a decade in sex education and facilitation, including six years working directly with sex workers.
