Title - How Baseball Stadium Design Shapes Society
Speaker -PJ Carlino, PhD, Assistant Professor of Design Studies at California State University, Sacramento
Location - Bike Dog Brewing, Broadway Location: 915 Broadway Suite 200 Sacramento, CA 95818
Details:
Public spaces do not simply reflect society, they actively organize it. As West Sacramento considers a billion-dollar baseball stadium project, we invited Dr. PJ Carlino to explain how stadium design impacts so much more than our view of the action.
This lecture traces how baseball moved from open fields to enclosed commercial ballparks, and illustrates how these new stadiums trained audiences to see themselves, and one another, as distinct social groups. Team owners used the design and arrangement of seats, from ladies’ sections to bleachers, in order to sort spectators by race, class, gender, and "respectability," all in the service of profit. In this context even something as ordinary as a chair can become a technology of power, shaping bodily behavior and social identity in public space. The grandstands promised order, comfort, and bourgeois visibility, while bleachers cultivated density, discomfort, and the stigma of rowdiness.
After this lecture you won't look at stadiums, theaters, classrooms, or other public interiors in quite the same way. You'll see them for what they are: lively, sometimes surprising spaces that help shape our social world, our sense of belonging, and the lines that divide us.
PJ Carlino, PhD., is Assistant Professor of Design Studies at California State University, Sacramento. His teaching and research explore how everyday objects, especially furniture, help shape the way people move, gather, work, and see one another in public space. Focusing on nineteenth-century American interiors such as schools, offices, theaters, trains, and ballparks, he shows how design can quietly organize social life. This lecture comes from his broader research on commercial furniture and the design of modern public experience.
Bike Dog is located at 915 Broadway Suite 200, Sacramento, CA 95818. They serve a wide selection of beers and guests can order food from Selland's Cafe next door using QR codes on the tables.
