Design Week Sacramento is teaming up with Common Knowledge to bring you this music lecture!

The Power of Active Listening

Speaker - Cole Cuchna, podcaster, composer, & Sacramento native

Location - Urban Roots Brewery & Smokehouse, 1322 V St, Sacramento, CA 95818

There's a story hiding inside every song and most people aren't listening deeply enough to hear it. Cole Cuchna, Sacramento native and host of the acclaimed music podcast Dissect (named one of the best podcasts of 2018 by the New York Times and TIME), breaks down the incredible ability that audio has to transform the world around us. This lecture will take a deep dive into a variety of music examples, including Sacramento artists, to explore the transformative power of listening more deeply. You'll be able to listen along as Cole demonstrates how listening more actively can profoundly change the way you experience music, and you'll walk away from this lecture with a better understanding of what it means to really listen the next time one of your favorite songs is playing.

Cole Cuchna is a lifelong musician that began performing in bands as a teenager, eventually dropping out of college to pursue a music career full time. Tired of sleeping on floors and eating fast food, Cole returned to college to study classical composition at the School of Music at Sacramento State University, graduating with honors in 2013.

With no clear career path, Cole created Dissect, a podcast that fused his love for contemporary music with the academic analysis skills he learned in college. After two seasons produced independently, Cole joined Spotify in 2018 and now produces Dissect full time for Spotify’s The Ringer podcast network.

Dissect was awarded Best Music Podcast at the 2020 Webby Awards, named a Top Podcast by The New York Times, Time, and The Guardian, Podcast of the Year by Quartz, and has been featured in The Atlantic, Vanity Fair, Billboard, Rolling Stone, Forbes, and others.

Urban Roots Brewery & Smokehouse is an independent craft brewery and smokehouse. They've been serving great beer and barbecue since 2018. Food and drinks will be available to purchase.

Capitol Creative Alliance is a regional nonprofit organization that advances creative careers through professional development, meaningful connections, and industry opportunities that build a stronger creative economy in the Sacramento region.
