Driverless cars may be powered by artificial intelligence, but the future they create will depend on human choices. Autonomous vehicles are already operating on California streets and are headed to Sacramento, but how they fit into our transportation system is still very much up to us.

This Common Knowledge lecture is presented as part of Sacramento Tech Week. Basar Ozbilen, Assistant Director of the 3 Revolutions Future Mobility Program and Research Faculty at the UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies, will cut through the hype and confusion around autonomous vehicles to look at what is actually happening on the ground. What do we know (and don't know) about the safety of autonomous vehicles? Why are some cities moving faster than others? And what could wider deployment mean for traffic, transit, accessibility, jobs, and the way our streets work?

California has become one of the most important testing grounds for autonomous vehicle policy, but the future of this technology is not predetermined. Cities, states, and countries around the world are making very different choices about how autonomous vehicles are allowed to operate, how they are regulated, and what information the public gets along the way.

This lecture will explore how decisions being made now about deployment, safety, and governance will shape whether this technology delivers real public benefits, including safer streets, better access, and a more accountable transportation system.

Basar Ozbilen, PhD, is the Assistant Director of the 3 Revolutions Future Mobility Program and Research Faculty at the UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies, where his research examines how emerging transportation technologies are reshaping travel and the future of transportation. His current work focuses particularly on automated vehicles, robotaxis, and shared mobility, including how people adopt and use these services, their impacts on travel demand and transportation systems, and how cities and public agencies can prepare for their deployment. Basar leads and contributes to research examining what communities need as these technologies expand, how cities can prepare for and govern their deployment, and how emerging mobility services can be integrated into transportation systems in ways that advance broader public goals. His work also addresses mobility data and governance and the opportunities and challenges associated with emerging mobility services. He works closely with public agencies, industry, and academic partners in the United States and internationally and organizes forums that bring these groups together to discuss the future of automated mobility. Basar is an urban planner by training and holds a Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning from The Ohio State University. Before joining the research faculty, he conducted postdoctoral research at the UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies focused on emerging mobility and travel behavior.
