What does justice really mean after someone has been harmed? Does punishment alone create real accountability, repair, and healing? Restorative justice is a collaborative process that brings victims and perpetrators together. These conversations can be extremely hard, but when done right, restorative justice can be transformative and healing.
Join Dr. Alexa Sardina, restorative justice practitioner, facilitator, and educator for a conversation about what restorative justice means and why it's important for both victims and perpetrators. Drawing on stories from her work in both community and correctional settings, Dr. Sardina invites you to rethink your own first reaction to the idea of "justice."
In this lecture, we'll explore:
- What restorative justice really is, and how it's different from our traditional criminal legal system
- What kinds of restorative processes exist and what needs they meet that punishment alone often misses
- How restorative justice creates space for accountability, voice, repair, and healing
- How communities can support people who've been harmed, hold people accountable in meaningful ways, and rebuild trust after conflict
You’ll walk away from this lecture with a broader understanding about how people and communities heal. You'll also hear practical takeaways from a restorative justice facilitator that will help you respond to conflict, and disconnection in your own life.
Alexa Sardina, PhD serves as an Associate Professor and Graduate Program Coordinator at California State University, Sacramento in the Division of Criminal Justice. She holds a PhD in Criminology from Indiana University and a master's degree in criminal justice from Boston University. Dr. Sardina is a sought-after content expert on topics related to the implementation of restorative justice processes for sexual harm and has advised community non-profits, as well as state and federal criminal justice agencies. She has also trained community members, students, and others on how to facilitate restorative processes. Additionally, Dr. Sardina has facilitated restorative processes for survivors and surviving family members of other acts of extreme violence, including murder and attempted murder.
Dr. Sardina's scholarship focuses on the consequences of victimization, community mobilization efforts, and how restorative processes can be used to address sexual harm. Dr. Sardina has written and presented on research that combines her scholarly expertise on sexual harm and restorative justice with her personal experience as a rape survivor. She believes that ‘survivor scholarship’ offers a critical perspective within the broader field of criminology. Dr. Sardina is a co-founder of Ampersands Restorative Justice and co-hosts the podcast Beyond Fear: The Sex Crimes Podcast.

What to Expect:
Common Knowledge is Sacramento's premiere bar lecture series.
At Common Knowledge we believe that learning something new is the most rewarding and fun thing you can do. We're about bringing diverse people and ideas together to have a great time.
This event is open seating so come at 6pm to to grab a drink and a seat. Before the lecture we'll have music and trivia questions on the screen. We'll also have a fun, low pressure "side quest" so you can win a free drink.
The lecture will last for 45 minutes and is made for an intelligent, general audience so you don't need any specialized background to have a great time. After the lecture, there will be 15 minutes for Q&A and then the bar will be open for another hour to hang out, meet the speaker, and discuss the ideas you just heard.
The bar will close at 9pm.
Parking: Teneral is located in the iconic MARRS Bldg. on 20th Street between J & K. There is street parking as well as parking lots nearby.
Public Transportation: SacRT bus routes 30, 38 & 62 stop nearby at L Street & 21st Street, just a short walk from Teneral Cellars.
Seating: is first come, first served - please consider arriving early to grab your preferred spot(s), especially if you’d like to sit together as a group!
