Title - The Odyssey: The Film vs The Epic Poem
Speaker - Anna S. Uhlig, PhD., Associate Professor and Director, Program in Classics at UC Davis
Location - Bump City Wine, 35265 Willow Ave, Clarksburg, CA 95612
The internet is ablaze with hot takes and critical reviews of Christopher Nolan’s new Odyssey film, so we decided to bring in a true expert to set the record straight. Dr. Anna Uhlig is the chair of the UC Davis classics program and has spent years studying and teaching Homer’s epic poem. She’ll explore the relationship between these two works of epic storytelling, providing context, historical insight, and a dive deep into the timeless themes and spectacle that have made this ancient story resonate for thousands of years.
The epic poem is a bittersweet meditation on longing, the limits of human understanding, and the power of storytelling. These themes are perfectly suited to Nolan’s style. In many ways, Nolan’s film stays truer to Homer’s narrative than any previous filmmaker, but his deviations tell us a lot about the director’s perspective. Dr. Uhlig will unpack the ways that Nolan adapts this ancient story for our modern world and will ultimately answer the question: what does Christopher Nolan’s new Odyssey film get right, and how does it depart from Homer’s original epic?
If you’re looking to dive deep into The Odyssey, then this lecture is for you.
Please note, this lecture will contain spoilers for the film.
